About Me
Hi, my name is Sara Takanabe, and I am a Japanese actor currently based in New York.
I am an actor, but being an actor is not the only thing about me.
はじめまして、ニューヨークで役者をしている高鍋彩羅と申します。
役者ですが、役者でいることだけが私ではないのです。
I was born and grew up in the big city of Tokyo, Japan. Besides my parents, I have a little sister and little brother, along with my two dogs, Monet and Ren. The signs of myself escaping to dream worlds appeared in my early childhood. I grew up watching Gibli movies, which fostered my creativity and imagination. When I was 2 years old, my mother captured me acting as one of the chickens at Satsuki's school in My Neighbor Totoro. Naturally, at 9 years old, my dream to become an actor budded. However, this dream did not bloom until I was in high school, since competitive cheerleading took up most of my time during my 16 years growing up in Tokyo. Cheerleading is an integral part of my foundation. I was part of the Japanese national team, and it taught me how powerful it is to give it all, to persist, and to cooperate.
私は東京で生まれ、東京で育ちました。両親と妹、弟、愛犬モネとレンが私の大好きな家族です。ジブリ作品を見て育った影響か、妄想の世界に逃げ込むことが多い子供でした。２歳の時、母が撮ったホームビデオにとなりのトトロのサツキの学校にいた鶏の真似を真剣にやる姿が映っていました。為るべくしてなのか、９歳の頃には日本の作品を見て、役者になるという夢が芽生えました。ただ、日本にいた頃は競技チアで忙しかったため、この小さな芽が伸び始めるのは高校生になってからです。チアリーディングはもうやっていませんが、私を語るうえで欠かせない部分です。選手時代は日本代表に選出もしていただきました。一生懸命やることを、努力と協力がどれだけ強いのかを教えてくれた競技です。
Jumping In
Starting my sophomore year of high school, I started attending a boarding school in Connecticut. This is where I really started devoting my time to acting. I did a total of seven shows during my three years. My favorite was being Fraulein Schneider from Cabaret. As college applications came near, I started to give up on my dream. To give my fantasy closure, I attended a summer program at Carnegie Mellon University the summer going into Senior year. As I learned new techniques and dimensions of acting, I fell in love with the art all over again. As I worked on my college applications, I realized I still had to give it a shot. So, a month before Early Decisions were due, I switched my major drastically from Biochem to Drama. After a series of self-tapes and auditions, I was accepted to NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and this is where I study now and challenge myself every day.
Now, a little bit about myself outside of acting: I love my home country, Japan, and I am very proud to be a Japanese actor. I find the Japanese language so beautiful. I do Japanese sword-fighting stage combat at Tate Hatoryu NY. I write stories. I love to play volleyball. I cook a lot, especially Japanese food. My favorite Ghibli movie is Princess Mononoke. My last name, Takanabe, is fairly rare in Japan, with around 5,000 people with the same name. My name, Sara, was given to me in hopes that I grow in different, colorful directions.
高校１年生になるタイミングでアメリカのコネチカットにある寄宿学校に通い始めました。ここで私は３年間のうちに７つの演目に出演し、演劇に没頭しました。一番好きだった役はキャバレーのフロウライン・シュナイダー。ただ、大学受験を目前に、私は夢を諦めかけました。ケジメとしてカーネギーメロン大学のサマープログラムに参加したのですが、ここで今まで知らなかったテクニックや分野に心躍り、改めて沼にハマってしまいました。結局諦めきれずにアプリケーション提出１ヶ月前に薬学研究から演劇へと、ガラリと志望学科を変え、オーディションや映像審査の末、ニューヨーク大学芸術学部演劇学科に合格。今も同大学で必死に学び、必死に日々挑戦しています。
ここからは役者以外の私のことを少し。私は日本のことが大好きで、日本人であることに誇りを持っています。特に日本語はとても美しくて大好きです。だからこそ、日本と世界を繋げられる役者を目指しています。波濤流NY道場で殺陣を学んでいます。自分の時間で文章 を書くのが好きです。バレーボールを友達とよくやります。自炊はよくしますし、やっぱり和食が多いです。一番好きなジブリ作品はもののけ姫です。高鍋という苗字、珍しいらしいです。全国に五千人あたりしかいないとか。彩羅という漢字も珍しいです。当て字ですが、これでサラと読みます。彩は絵描きだった母方の祖父から、羅は船乗りだった父方の祖父から。色とりどりな方向へと向かっていきますようにと願いを込めて、母が名付けてくれた自慢の名前です。
